Members of Palladam Own Power Loom Cloth Manufacturers Association (POPCMA) have decided to stop giving orders for production of fabrics to power loom job working units from August 5 to 11.
“We are doing this as part of an agitation to express our protest against the rising yarn prices. We want to highlight our demand for Government intervention to prevent hoarding of cotton that has been causing the yarn prices to rise”, said S.P. Ramasamy, the president of the association.
According to him, the member units are not able to get better price realisation for fabrics in tandem with the rise in yarn prices. “The government has to reduce to tax rates on yarn”, he added.
Meanwhile, R. Velusamy, president of Palladam Power Loom Job Working Units Owners Association, was of the view that the stoppage in giving orders for production of fabrics by the POPCMA would not affect the job working units much.
“The orders given by POPCMA members constitute only around 30 per cent of the total orders we receive not only from Palladam but also from other parts of the State”, he said.
