India at Rio Olympics, Highlights: Heartbreaking opening day for India

India made the worst possible start to their Rio Olympics campaign as, except for the men's hockey team, all the other athletes who were in the fray crashed out of the Games on Saturday.

Day 1 Highlights:

6.45 IST: India's miserable day finally comes to an end! Sania Mirza and Prarthana Thombare crash out of women's doubles tennis after suffering a 6-7, 7-5, 5-7 loss against China's Shuai Peng and Shaui Zhang in the first round.

5.51 IST: Weightlifting: Sopita Tanasan bags the gold medal for Thailand in the women's 48kg weightlifting event. Wahyuni Agustiani from Indonesia settles for silver while Hiromi Miyake off Japan gets the bronze medal.

5.40 IST; Meanwhile, Sania Mirza and Prarthana Thombare have bounced back to win the second set 7-5 against China's Shuai Peng and Shuai Zhang in the women's doubles tennis first round.

5.35 IST: India's day going from bad to worse! Weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu crashes out after failing to lift in clean and jerk in all three attempts in the women's 48kg event.

4.53 IST: Tennis, Women's Doubles Round 1: India's Sania Mirza and Prarthana Thombare lose the first set 6-7 (6) against the Chinese duo of Shuai Peng and Shuai Zhang.

4.16 IST: Table Tennis: The disappointment continues for India as Achanta Sharath Kamal gets knocked out of Rio 2016 after suffering a 8-11, 12-14, 11-9, 6-11, 8-11 loss in the men's singles first round against Romania's Adrian Crisan. With that India's challenge in the TT event comes to an end in both the men's and women's categories.

4.09 IST: Women's weightlifting 48kg: India's Saikhom Mirabai Chanu successfully lifts 82kg on her second attempt

4.03 IST: Men's Table Tennis: Achantha Sharath Kamal is also in action in his first round match against Adrian Crisan of Romania. Sharath Kamal is trailing 1-2.

4.00 IST: Tennis: Sania Mirza and Prarthana Thombare's women's doubles match against China has finally begun.

1.20 IST: Another Indian crashes out. Soumyajit Ghosh knocked out of Rio Olympics after losing to Thailand's Padasak Tanviriya Vechakul 8-11, 6-11, 14-12, 6-11, 11-13 in the first round of men's table tennis.

12.45 IST: Men's Table Tennis, Round 1: Disappointing start for India's Soumyajit Ghosh. He trails Thailand's Padasak Tanviriya Vechakul 8-11, 6-11 at the end of the first two games. Five more to follow.

12.25 IST: It's a stiff fight between Vietnam's Hoang Vinh and Brazil's Almeida Felipe. Vinh wins it with the last shot. GOLD FOR VIETNAM.

12:10 IST Jitu Rai eliminated, finishing eighth with score of 78.7. Another disappointing finish from an Indian shooter. In the build-up to the Rio Games, Jitu was a real medal hopeful for India. But again shooting can be a cruel sport. Jitu Rai will return for the 50m event.

12:08 IST Brazil's Felipe Almeida leading the pack, Jitu at 8th with 68.6. The Indian shooter needs to do some good shooting to avoid elimination

India on Day 1 at Rio so far...

22:52 IST: So, finally some good news for Indian shooting. Apurvi Chandela and Ayonika Paul, the female 10m air rifle shooters disappointed after failing to qualify for the medal round while table tennis hopes Manika Batra and Mouma Das also crashed out after the first round. Meanwhile, Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna crashed out after losing their first round match to Polish pair of Kubot and Matkowski.

Indian hockey brought some smiles as Rupinder Singh's brace helped the team seal their first Olympic victory in 12 years.

22:46 IST Jitu Rai qualifies for the finals of 10m Air Pistol event, Gurpreet Singh crashes out placed 20th. Jitu finished 6th with 580 points while Gurpreet was placed 20th with 576 points.


22:29 IST Jitu Rai shoots 96 in the fourth series while Gurpreet gets 99 points each in the fourth and fifth series.

22:14 IST Jitu Rai and Gurpreet Singh bag scores of 98 and 93 respectively in the third series.

22:00 IST Jitu Rai shoots another 96 in the second series and so also Gurpreet Singh. After the two series, Jitu and Gurpreet are placed 19th and 39th respectively.

Mixed day for India so far, all eyes now on Leander and Sreejesh

India got off to an impressive start today when rower Dattu Bhokanal qualified for the quarters after finishing third in the heats. However, disappointing peformances for shooters Apurvi Chandila and Ayonika Paul soured the day for the country. Both Indian shooters failed to qualify for the medal round.

All eyes will now be on Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna, who play their first round match shortly. The Indian men's hockey team also start their campaign against Ireland in a few minutes.

Next up for India: India vs Ireland (Hockey) 19:30, Paes/Bopanna (Tennis) 19:30, Mouma Das (Table tennis) 19:45.

18:12 IST Li Du of China created an Olympic record in the women's 10m air rifle qualifying round, with a score of 420.7.

Both the shooters were medal hopes and not an ideal start for India on Day 1. Now the action moves to hockey with India taking on Ireland at 7:30 IST.

17:53 IST India's Apurvi Chandela and Ayonika Paul out of women's 10m Air Rifle. Only top eight qualify. Chandela and Paul finished 34th and 43rd respectively.

17:18 IST Dattu's timing of 7:21.67 and third finish in Heat 1 has ensured him a place in the quarter-finals. He is India's sole representation in the sport.

17:11 IST: The Heat 2 gets underway.

17: 08 IST: Dattu Bhokanal finishes third in Heat 1. Good show from the Indian rower. Cuba's Angel Fournier Rodriguez finished first, followed by Mexico and India.

17: 02 IST: Men's single skulls qualifying round has started with Dattu Bhokanal in action.

India @ Olympics on Saturday: It is going to be an action packed Saturday with Indians in medal contention, especially shooting. Apurvi Chandela and Ayonika Paul kick off the day with the qualification round in 10m Air Rifle event at 5 PM followed by the final at 7 PM.

Both Apurvi and Ayonika have won international medals in the 10m air rifle category - they finished one-two at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.

The big draw will be the 10m Air Pistol event, where Jitu Rai and Gurpreet Singh will be at the qualification round which starts at 9:30 PM, followed by the finals past midnight.

Apurvi and Ayonika will be competing with 51 shooters for the final spot while Jitu and Gurpreet with 46 marksmen.

All eyes will be on Jitu, who was the first one to qualify for the Rio Olympics after winning gold medals at Commonwealth Games and Asian Games in 2014.

Then there is Dattu Bhokanal in men's single skulls qualifying round at 5 PM.

Later in the day at 7:30 PM, Indian men's hockey will take on Ireland in a Group B encounter. India led by PR Sreejesh will be looking to and the 36-year medal drought.

In table tennis - Achanta Sharath Kamal, Soumyajit Ghosh, Manika Batra and Mouma Das will also be in action.

Moving to tennis, Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna would get the action underway in men's doubles. The India duo will be up against Poland's Marcel Matkowski and Lukasz Kubot at 7:30 PM. Later in the night (1:30 AM), Sania Mirza and Prarthana Thombare take on Chinese pair of Peng Shuai and Shuai Zhang in the first round.

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu will compete in the 48-kg weightlifting event at 3:30 AM.
