A fab fabric

Airy, lightweight and trendy, georgette fabric adorns every market across the globe. It is a springier, crinkled, dull-finished and sheer material displaying an overall bouncy look.

With its crepe-like texture and unusual strength, georgette is widely favoured for its lively and flowing patterns. The tendency of the fabric to drape well makes it an apt choice for many women who love the soft, silky yet comfortable look.

This tender, gorgeous fabric was introduced way back in the 20th century by Madame Georgette de la Plante. She was a French dressmaker, who was well known for the net finish she gave all her gowns and dresses.

It is believed that the main source of inspiration for the creation of georgette is chiffon. When compared to chiffon, georgette is more durable. It is a sheer material that comes in both translucent and opaque textures, and gives out a crushed and twisted feel.

Originally made from silk, georgette is manufactured with highly twisted yarns. Its characteristic crinkled surface is created by alternating S and Z-twist yarns in both warp and weft. A strong absorbent, georgette is easy to dye, and is woven in two forms — pure and faux. Pure georgette is woven out of silk yarns, while the faux one is woven from rayon and polyester. However, modern georgette is mostly made with the use of synthetic filaments.

Today, georgette is one of the most widely sought-after textiles in the garment industry. With the latest advancements in modern machinery and easier methods of dyeing, the overall cost of production of the fabric has reduced drastically.

The material has been branched into different categories such as jacquard georgette, nylon, viscose, silk, polyester and satin georgette fabric. Georgette provides a pretty and flowing look to the sarees. Blouses, dresses, ghagras, gowns and skirts are the other most common garments for which fashion designers use georgette widely. Stockings and accessories for slips are the other areas of trending designs in georgette.

The motifs in georgette are of astounding variety, including floral and geometric patterns. The prints are also in sophisticated patterns including those of animals, birds, dancing women etc. Different types of embroidery such as crewel, glass work, chikankari, bead work are also popular on georgette.
