Healthy Alan Ball relishing opportunity with Cardinals

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Cornerback Alan Ball had one tryout after spending the offseason recovering from injuries and getting his body right.

Ball nailed it.

He turned down overtures from a couple of other teams to try out for the Arizona Cardinals, and he impressed enough to earn a spot on the 90-man roster heading into the Cards’ second week of training camp. But the 31-year-old veteran understands that just being in the locker room doesn’t mean he’ll have a spot on the 53.

To Ball, the next few weeks will be about competing with the likes of Brandon Williams and Justin Bethel for a shot at that starting cornerback job opposite Patrick Peterson.

“For me, it’s trying to get in that playbook and see how I can help and get out there today and see how I feel and see what I can help this team to do,” said Ball, who has 47 starts in 108 career games. “That’s always big coming in as a vet or coming in as anybody at this point, especially on a team like this.

“You just have to see how you can fit and see what they need and see how you can adjust and fit in their scheme.”

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Ball fits the mold for the type of cornerback coach Bruce Arians prefers.

“He’ll come in and give us great competition because he’s a real bright guy,” Arians said. “He’s a pro. He’s got length. Kind of fits what we like to do. Had a great workout (Thursday). He was hurt most of all last year and played through it. We played against him in Jacksonville a couple years ago and was always impressed with him.”

Ball wasn’t in a rush to sign with a team, basking in the time off to let his body heal. He suffered a groin injury last season with the Bears. He feels “as healthy as I can really feel like myself.” As training camp progressed and the dust settled on the start of another season, he had a clearer picture as to which teams had a need for a veteran cornerback, including the Cardinals.

In a short amount of time in Arizona, Ball, who has played in Dallas, Houston, Jacksonville and Chicago, said he was impressed with the organization and the inner workings of 34 wins in three seasons.

“No matter what it looks like, no matter what people say on the outside about what the situation is or what it may be," Ball said, "I think my opportunity is to just come here and compete no matter what and let the cards fall how they’re going to fall.”
