Microsoft Edge scores full marks on HTML5 compatibility test

Microsoft rolled out its Windows 10 Anniversary Update recently bring refinements to Cortana, the company’s new Edge browser, and more. The Anniversary update is Windows 10’s first major update since its launch last year. The Edge browser replaced the notoriously slow and buggy Internet Explorer.

Microsoft Edge was already a great browser to begin with when it was launched. It featured notation tools and Microsoft’s AI, Cortana, among other features. In a recent blog post, Microsoft noted that the latest updates to the Edge browser now helps it support new extensions like LastPass, AdBlock, etc.

In an HTML5Accessibility browser benchmark, Edge became the first browser to get a 100 per cent rating. The website tests which new HTML5 features are accessibly supported by browsers. Google Chrome was rated at 81 per cent, Mozilla Firefox was rated at 89 per cent and Safari trailed behind at 73 per cent. In a true comparison to Microsoft’s earlier offering, Edge’s 100 per cent rating was a stark improvement from Internet Explorer’s dismal 56 per cent.

A selection of popular extensions are now available for the Edge browser, including Microsoft Translate, Office Online, Pocket, Pinterest, Evernote and more, which can be found in the Windows Store. Some of the notable features of Edge include – Pinned tabs, Paste and go, Swipe to navigate, Notifications from websites, Drag and drop folder, Ask Cortana, among other things.

The blog post noted, “We’ve made major improvements and hundreds of bug fixes so that Microsoft Edge is easier to navigate with a keyboard and with assistive technologies like screen readers, including better support for PDF files, Narrator support for address bar suggestions and instant answers.”
