Heavy and continuous rains coupled with a high tide on Friday resulted in disruptions in train services, major traffic jams, low visibility and mishaps.
The city recorded 60 mm of rainfall in four hours, and a high tide of 4.5 mm. Heavy rains are expected over the next 48 hours in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai.
Officials said that a 21-year-old boy, Mehboob Sayyed, died after drowning in a nullah in Govandi, while four people were injured after their house collapsed. Incidents of trees or parts of a tree collapsing were also reported across the city but no injuries or fatalities were reported. The Central line was the worst hit due to the rains, with services being suspended between Thane and CST for over half an hour. Traffic had to be diverted on several major roads due to water-logging in low lying areas, spelling a double whammy for office-goers. Traffic police officials said the resultant traffic jams lasted for hours.
Operations at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Internatonal Airport, too, were affected due to low visibility.
Meanwhile, several schools contacted parents and asked them to take their children back home, while schoolbus owners refused to ply due to the rains.
