Fiji Rugby Union chief executive officer John O’Connor has advised parents and supporters to cheer responsibly during the Rewa Galaxy Kaji Rugby competition which starts on Monday.

In the past, there have been incidents where supporters have become rowdy and ruined the atmosphere and spirit of the sport for the sake of winning.

O’Connor said the purpose of the competition was for the kids to have fun and enjoy taking part in the sport they love.

“I want to wish all the teams the best from Under-9 to the U14 grades,” O’Connor said.

“I hope all the teams that participate really enjoy themselves and have fun.

“It is a timely reminder to parents and supporters to support their kids and schools bearing in mind that they are just children.

“I just want to remind the parents and supporters that children are participating in sports for enjoyment.

Sometimes the passion from parents and the supporters have gone to the extreme where winning is a must and we compromise the purpose of sports and the participation of students.

“I request that everyone show their support but to also be mindful when cheering for their teams.”

The Rewa Galaxy Kaji Rugby competition will start from August 8-10 at the ANZ Stadium, Suva.
