The government has said it will take action against Maasai morans who attacked Chinese workers in Narok.

On Tuesday, more than 200 morans attacked the standard gauge railway workers at Duka Moja, injuring 14. “We condemn the forceful entry into the SGR camp. The government will take stern action against the perpetrators,” Transport CS James Macharia said.

Residents have complained of being left out in jobs. “The actual construction of the Nairobi-Naivasha standard gauge railway Phase2A passing through Kajiado, Nakuru and Narok counties is yet to commence.

“Once the project is launched, it will give local communities jobs and supply contract opportunities,” Macharia said. He urged the public to participate in forums. Naivasha subcounty commissioner Isaac Masinde has said they will not tolerate lawlessness.

In April, the government suspended a controversial blueprint of the standard gauge railway that was to cut deep into the Nairobi National Park. Talks are underway. A committee that included some board members of the KWS and Kenya Railways had last December approved the design.
