Two-time World Twenty20 winning captain Darren Sammy has claimed he has been relieved of his position by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB).

Sammy made the announcement in a video posted on his Facebook page on Friday, revealing he had been contacted by the WICB and told he was not only no longer captain, but had also been dropped for the upcoming series against India.

"I got a call yesterday morning, it was probably 30 seconds, from the chairman of selectors telling me that they've reviewed the captaincy of T20 and I won't be captain any more of the T20 team, nor my performances have merited selection in the squad," said Sammy during the six-minute video.

"That's okay, I've always believed West Indies cricket is not about Darren Sammy.

"They are looking to the future and I want to wish the new captain - I don't know if it's out yet so I won't call any names - all the best as he looks to lead West Indies cricket and take it forward.

"Obviously, throughout my captaincy, winning the two [T20] World Cups with my team has been the highlight."

Former West Indies wicketkeeper Courtney Browne was named as the WICB's new chairman of selectors in June, replacing long-time incumbent Clive Lloyd.

Despite losing the captaincy and missing out on selection this time round, Sammy insists he remains available to represent West Indies in the future.

"This is not me retiring from one-day or T20, it's just me thanking the fans and my players and the coaches I've worked with and WICB for letting me lead the side for the last six years," he added.

"But for now the captaincy journey has come to an end and thank you people. I just know I played with my heart and soul whenever I stepped out on the cricket field."

Sammy became the first captain to lift the World T20 trophy twice when West Indies secured a dramatic last-gasp victory over England in the Kolkata final earlier this year.
