Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi said he never made unrealistic promises to the electorate – and that’s why his party clinched power in the municipality of Nkandla.

The veteran KwaZulu-Natal politician’s IFP secured 54% of the vote in the municipality to the 44.2% held by the African National Congress.

President Jacob Zuma predicted‚ incorrectly‚ after casting his vote on Wednesday in his home town: “I will wake up in the municipality of the ANC. That’s what we’ve been working for. I’m satisfied and I voted correctly [for the ANC].”

Buthelezi told Eyewitness news http://ewn.co.za/ in a video interview that younger generations had understood his message. “I never tried to promise them an El Dorado (a place of fabulous wealth and opportunity) — that everything is going to be fine‚ we are going to create jobs and so on. When really I know the fact that economic growth in the country is so low‚” he said.

He said that he had told Zuma in the past not to promise things to the electorate that cannot be delivered.

“Even when I talk to Mr Zuma … I said to him that we shouldn’t promise things that cannot be delivered. I said to him that our people are very patient‚ we must not promise what we cannot deliver.

“Like‚ for instance‚ when he himself promised that he will create 500 000 jobs‚ and a million jobs were lost‚” Buthelezi said.
