Growers unhappy as coriander prices fall
Farmers in the hilly district of Rangamati are frustrated due to the drastic fall in prices of coriander leaf despite a bumper production in the district this year.
Surprisingly the prices of coriander, locally known as 'bilati dhoniapata', dropped sharply in the local kitchen markets this year due to poor demand and good supply of the perishable item.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said the coriander growers in different areas under Kawkhali, Rajsthali, Kaptai and Sadar upazilas of the district have cultivated the item on a large scale this year.
Farmers expected an extra profit from selling coriander this year as they got a surprising return during this time last year.
While visiting some local kitchen markets, this correspondent found that one kg of coriander leave is being sold at Tk 30-40 which was in between Tk 80-120 last year.
Rangamati DAE Deputy Director Ramani Kanti Chakma said farmers have cultivated coriander on 35 hectares of land in the district this season.
Mohammad Younus, 45, a trader of Hatajari, said due to hybrid coriander cultivation in plain lands the hilly coriander prices saw a sharp fall this year.
