Gaurav Gera may have gained popularity as Nandu in Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin, but the actor seems happy playing only women characters on screen now, as he feels the trend is here to stay.
“People like the idea of a man playing a woman. I really can’t say why. I guess it’s the novelty, because people today are bored of seeing perfectly attired women on TV. Maybe, it’s men sloppily dressed as women and their funny mannerisms that appeal to people,” says Gaurav, who is participating on Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa this year as Chutki – the character created by the actor for the internet.

He doesn’t deny that people may get bored of watching such characters. “That’s why, I have so many other characters on my show. Even Sunil (Grover) started with Gutthi, but he’s now playing a doctor. On my show, it’s not just Chutki and the Shopkeeper. There’re Brett Lee and Shah Rukh Khan too. So as long as your’re giving variety to the audience within that same framework, it will work.

Ask him how this idea of creating a character like Chutki for the internet came to him, and he says, “I saw that actors didn’t own their characters and I wanted to create one which was owned by me. I licensed this character for radio and TV. I take pride in the fact that I am not backed by any channel, producer or director and I have my own standing. I want to encourage youngsters to do their own thing without waiting endlessly for a break. I want to tell them ki showcase your talent to the world.”
