Rory Kleinveldt impresses as Northants take control against Glamorgan

A superb knock from all-rounder Rory Kleinveldt helped Northants take control on the second day of their Specsavers County Championship Division Two clash with Glamorgan,

Stand-in skipper Kleinveldt belted seven sixes in an innings of 91 off only 88 balls in Swansea as Northants recovered from 38-4 at one point on Wednesday to post a decent 321 all out.

The South African was ably supported by recent loan signing Laurie Evans, who scored 74 on his Northants debut, while Saif Zaib weighed in with an unbeaten 65 - he and Kleinveldt added 130 for the seventh wicket.

Glamorgan were indebted to Nick Selman for reaching 139-5 by the close of play, with the opener scoring the majority of their runs and remaining unbeaten on 79.

Ben Sanderson claimed two wickets for Northants and Azharullah picked up the other three, including clean bowling Mark Wallace to end a 52-run opening partnership. Andrew Salter was unbeaten on 24 at the close after adding 42 runs in partnership with Selman.

The other game to have started on Wednesday sees Kent in control after day two against Worcestershire at Canterbury, where they built a lead of 186 runs with one first innings wicket remaining.

Sean Dickson scored 79 at the top of the Kent order and there was a key contribution from veteran all-rounder Darren Stevens who hit 12 fours and a six in his innings of 81.

Will Gidman added an unbeaten 54, putting on 51 for the ninth wicket with Matt Coles (41) and a further 21 with Mitchell Claydon (13no) for the 10th before the close, which they reached on 397-9.

Ed Barnard proved best of the Worcestershire bowlers with figures of 3-82 while Joe Leach and Charlie Morris took two wickets apiece.

Captain Ryan ten Doeschate top scored for Essex on the opening day of their clash with Sussex at Colchester as the home side made 337-6.

Ten Doeschate hit seven fours in his 83 while Essex also got decent contributions from openers Nick Browne (55) and Jaik Mickleburgh (54) who put on 108 for the first wicket.

Dan Lawrence also weighed in with 65 while Jofra Archer continued his fine bowling form for Sussex by taking 3-74 on his four-day debut for the county.

Leicestershire reached 300-7 on the opening day of their match against Derbyshire at Grace Road, where Ned Eckersley proved the most fluent batsman on show. 

Four other Leicestershire batsmen were dismissed in the 40s but Eckersley, who came in at seven, made 73 by stumps and has a chance to make it to three figures when play resumes on Friday.

Teenage spinner Callum Parkinson enjoyed his first-class debut by taking 3-64 as the most impressive of the Derbyshire bowlers.
