Indian Tea Company Adopts Gandhigiri, Sends Teabags to Purify Donald Trump’s Mind

In a unique Munna Bhai style protest against Donald Trump, the GOP presidential nominee, an Indian tea company sent more than 6,000 bags of India’s famed Assam green tea to help him “purify” his mind.

This hilarious and audacious attempt by TE-A-ME, a tea company in Kolkata, of “cleansing Trump’s soul” reminds us of the popular Bollywood movie, “Lage Raho Munna Bhai,” that revived and popularized Mahatma Gandhi’s message of peaceful protests through Gandhigiri.

As Donald Trump made his epic debut at the GOP national convention, the tea company sent tea bags with one simple message for him:

“Mr. Trump, drink the tea, it’s never too late to cleanse yourself.”

The package, a big white box, was hand-delivered by two women to Trump Towers in New York. However, they could not get past the Secret Service. The 11-pound haul that was delivered would last him four years, claims TE-A-ME if he religiously drinks three cups a day.

In a note that accompanied the consignment, Sumit Shah, executive director of TE-A-ME said, “Congratulations on winning the nomination. It’s not a small feat, running for the office of the world’s most powerful man. It’s not just a privilege but a rare chance that very few are equipped to take on.”

“I would like to offer you a little something to help you prepare for the task that lies ahead- four years’ supply of TE-A-ME Green Tea. Green Tea is packed with goodness and is proven to help achieve well-being and increased productivity,” the note further read.

Calling their intervention #TeaforTrump, the company also released a YouTube video touting the merits of their tea. The video shows a woman on giant Times Square billboards addressing Trump directly.

“Dear Mr. Trump, Namaste from India, we are sending you lots and lots of natural green tea,” she said. “It fights against harmful free radicals. It helps purify mind and body and regain a healthy balance. It has also proven to make people smarter. Please, Mr. Trump, drink the tea. For your sake, for America’s sake, for the world’s sake.”

The video also recorded reactions of Americans who urged Trump to drink the tea. One said “Knock down the wall and his brain” and another added, “…Then the world can be a little bit of a better place.”

One even mimicked Trump: “Donald Trump drink the tea, or you’re fired!”

TE-A-ME, a signature brand of the 70-year-old Madhu Jayanti International Limited, sells tea across 42 countries including India, Europe, West Africa, and Russia. Interestingly, the company does not sell its tea in the U.S., and its owner denied having any marketing agenda behind his detox mission.

“We aren’t doing any sort of marketing gimmick with the attempt,” he said. “All we are doing with this campaign is to take a Gandhian and polite approach to urge Trump to detox a little and think clearly.”
