In this year’s Delhi University’s Shri Ram College of Commerce, of the 188 admissions approved for the B Com (Honours) course, 129 students were from Tamil Nadu including 33 from one school only.
This information was provided by Minister of State for Humar Resources Development Mahendra Nath Pandey in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha.
“University of Delhi has reported that on the first day, 188 admissions were approved in B Com (Hons). Out of this, 129 students were from Tamil Nadu including 33 from Bhartiya Vidhya Bhavan School, Erode, Tamil Nadu,” Pandey said.
While the number of students may be unprecedented, the trend of students from state boards of Tamil Nadu and Kerala taking admission in SRCC in particular, and DU in general, began in 2010, recalls former SRCC principal P C Jain, when the required cut-off first touched 100 per cent. Last year too, the college had one section of B Com (H) only comprising students from Tamil Nadu.

“It was in 2010, when the cut off touched 100 per cent for the first time and a girl from Kerala had scored 100 per cent in all her subjects, that the issue first got attention. From then on, more and more students belonging to these state boards have taken admission in the college and university,” said Jain.
In a written reply to another question, Minister of State for HRD Upendra Kushwaha said content related to ‘Bhagwad Gita’ is already included in National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT)’s class 12 Sanskrit textbook namely – Shashwati part II (Chapter IV: Karma Gauravam) since 2007-08.
