Panchayat helps rape victim to get justice

Udaipur: Khap panchayats are often criticized for their unlawful interference or thrusting diktats specially on the weaker sex, however, the one at Bhil Basti in Chittorgarh has set an example by supporting a rape victim to claim justice and get the accused arrested.
The case would have gone unregistered had not the panchayat laid pressure on the family of the accused persons to get them surrendered before the police.The incident took place on Friday midnight at Paroli village under Chanderia police station in Chittorgarh.
A gang of 10-12 thieves crept into a house where an old woman and her daughter had been sleeping. The men thrashed the women and robbed them of their ornaments and cash. Not contented with this, two of the thieves took the 22-year old daughter to a corner and raped her. The victim identified one of the men Raju Kalbeliya who had been her classmate. The gang fled with the possession.
