The Chicago Cubs placed right-hander Jason Hammel on the bereavement list prior to Wednesday's afternoon game against the visiting Miami Marlins.

Right-hander Justin Grimm was recalled from Triple-A Iowa to replace Hammel, who will be excused 3-7 days to mourn a death in the family.

Hammel won his fourth straight start on Tuesday after scattering four hits over six shutout innings in a 3-2 victory over the Marlins. The 33-year-old improved to 11-5 on the season and lowered his season ERA to 3.07.

Grimm is no stranger to the Cubs, having made 45 relief appearances with the club this season. The 27-year-old has yet to record a decision and owns a 4.72 ERA while striking out 38 batters over 34 1/3 innings.
