Working with the Rajasthan and the Uttar Pradesh Police, the Mangaluru Police were able to rescue a city resident, who had allegedly been kidnapped for ransom in Bharatpur region of Rajasthan bordering Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura district.

The police have identified the rescued person as Richard Mariyan Lazarath, an employee of a firm dealing with diesel generator sets in Bejai.

Police Commissioner M. Chandra Sekhar told presspersons here on Wednesday that Mr. Lazarath worked for Arun D’Souza, who runs the firm. Two months ago, Mr. D’Souza got a call from one Anil Sharma from Bharatpur who offered to sell his old generators for a throwaway price. Mr. D’Souza sent his employee to Bharatpur to finalise the deal.

Mr. Sekhar said that Mr. Lazarath reached Bharatpur on July 29 and the next day he was allegedly kidnapped around noon.

He was confined to a room by an armed gang that called Mr. D’Souza on July 30 demanding a ransom of Rs. 10 lakh. Mr. D’Souza met the Commissioner and lodged a complaint.

Mr. Sekhar contacted his batch mate and Inspector General of Police (Bharatpur Range) Alok Kumar Vashishtha and also the Senior Superintendent of Police (Bharatpur) Kailash Bishnoi.

As the accused were found in areas bordering Mathura, IGP and SSP of Mathura, Durga Charan Mishra and Bablu Kumar respectively, were also contacted. Special police teams of Bharatpur and Mathura were formed. Assistant Sub Inspector Vijayraj and Head Constable Mohan from the city police also joined these teams.

Following a series of raids in Bharatpur and Mathura, police caught Imran from Mubarak gang who revealed details of gang.

“Gang members abandoned Mr. Lazarath just before the police team could reach the hideout on Tuesday evening,” Mr. Sekhar said.

The Commissioner said that Mr. Lazarath was safe and would have to be in Bharatpur for the next few days assisting the police investigation. Two more personnel from the city police have left for Bharatpur to join the search operation.

Terming this as a successful inter-State police operation, Mr. Sekhar said the city police have received excellent support from their counterparts in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. He cautioned people not fall prey to such susceptible offers, especially from North India.
