On July 19, IOA, along with Bollywood superstar Salman Khan and music maestro A R Rahman, bid farewell to the Rio bound athletes.
The 120 member roster comprises of 66 men and 54 women, up from 23 women athletes in the last Olympics. This year, there has been an unprecedented jump in the track and field athletes . From 14 athletes competing in 11 events in 2012 to 36 athletes making their mark in 16 games. The other sport that has the highest representation includes Field Hockey with 32 members with men’s and women’s hockey teams combined, followed by Shooting (12), Wrestling (8) and Badminton (7)
The 2016 Indian Olympic Team will feature 70 returning Olympians including India’s lone individual gold medallist, shooter Abhinav Bindra, who will be seen carrying the tricolor at the opening ceremony. It will be Bindra’s final appearance at the Olympics.
With the strongest contingent ever, India is looking to improve its medals tally of six at London Olympics.
At the 2012 London Olympics, we saw winners such as Gagan Narang Bronze (Shooting Men’s 10m Air Rifle), Vijay Kumar Silver (Shooting Men’s 25 Rapid Fire Pistol), Saina Nehwal Bronze (Badminton Women’s Singles), Mary Kom Bronze (Boxing Women’s Flyweight), Yogeshwar Dutt Bronze (Wrestling Men’s 60 kg Freestyle), Sushil Kumar Silver (Wrestling Men’s 66 kg Freestyle).
India first participated at the Olympic Games in 1990, with lone athlete Norman Pritchard, who won India two silver medals the same year for 200 meters and 200 meters hurdles. The nation first sent a team to the Olympics Games in 1920 and has participated in every game since then.
India has won 26 medals—nine gold medals, six silver and 11 bronze medals—in 30 Olympics games.
