Leopard caught in tea garden
Jalpaiguri: An adult female leopard, which was on the prowl in the Rangamati tea estate in Dooars' Malbazar, was finally caged on Wednesday morning. The big cat fell into a trap laid by the forest department and got locked up. This is the fourth such incident in the garden over a period of one-and-half months.
The forest department laid the trap following consistent reports from garden workers.
On Wednesday morning, Some garden labourers found the leopard caged in section 5 of the garden. Foresters later took the animal to Gorumara National Park and released it.
More than 90 leopards have been rescued from North Bengal over the past six years and in most of the cases, the animals, covered as co-predator under the tiger conservation programme, were rescued from tea gardens.
The garden bushes provide natural cover for leopards, which often hide in the drains there, especially when the females are about to give birth. Heaps of leaves in the drains act as natural cushions for the big cats.
In another incident, a 22-foot Indian Rock Python was recovered from a tea garden in Rajganj's Pradhan Para.
