Serbian first seed Jelena Jankovic has been eliminated from the Brasil Tennis Cup after her first-round defeat by Ana Bogdan.

The Romanian will next face Ukraine's Lyudmyla Kichenok in Florianopolis, after her victory over Tereza Martincova of the Czech Republic.

Bogdan capitalised on Jankovic's poor performance by winning 6-2 7-5. The world number 29 had threatened a comeback in the second set but swiftly lost momentum. Kichenok overcame Martincova 1-6 6-4 7-6 (7/1).

Bogdan's compatriot Irina-Camelia Begu, the second seed, had earlier defeated Brazilian Paula Cristina Goncalves 6-1 6-2.

Latvian fourth seed Jelena Ostapenko won 6-2 6-3 against Argentina's Catalina Pella, while Puerto Rico's Monica Puig won 6-0 6-4 against Olga Savchuk of Ukraine.

There was also a straight sets win for Japan's Naomi Osaka, who won 6-3 6-0 against Montserrat Gonzalez of Paraguay.
