Vanzara wants Pota back
AHMEDABAD: Retired IPS officer and an accused in fake encounter cases, D G Vanzara on Tuesday ma de a demand that the anti-ter rorism law Prevention of Terrorism Act be brought back to rein in the militants.
Vanzara tweeted, "Abu Jundal & likes of him flout & exploit liberal laws of democratic system and make country more vulnerable to terrorism: Bring POTA bak."
Before he was put behind bars for allegedly killing people in the name of terrorism, Gujarat government invoked Pota in more than a dozen cases, mostly investigated by Vanzara or his subordinates at city crime branch.
One such case was the 2004 Ishrat Jahan encounter.
Advocate Shamshad Pathan, who represents the kin of the deceased, said that if the system was as strict as Vanzara wants, he would have been booked under Pota. "The acts of Gujarat police were to strike terror in the heart of people by projecting innocents as terrorists. Ishrat Jahan was one such case. Pota was invoked in this case, and if the investigating agency is sincere, it should have invoked Pota against all police officials involved in this case.," the lawyer said.
