New Delhi: Since times immemorial, Indian soldiers have made supreme sacrifices while defending the motherland from foreign invaders. Late Harbhajan Singh from the 23rd Battalion of the Punjab Regiment is one such soldier who laid his life in 1968 and proved that a soldier's love for his nation is unquestionable.
Baba Harbhajan Singh, who died in 1968, is still believed to be guarding the Indian border and the jawans posted there.
Singh died while he was escorting a mule column in Sikkim. He slipped and drowned in a fast flowing stream. His body was found three days later.
The armymen guarding the Nathula Pass say that Singh's ghost gives them three day early warning about an attack from the enemy.
The Army too respects the sentiments and believes in the mysterious tale. Singh has been promoted to the rank of Honorary Captain and every month his salary is sent to his family.
Not only this, the immortal soldier, is also sanctioned annual leave from September 14 every year.
Till some years ago, Singh's belongings were packed and taken by soldiers to his native place and brought back in the same manner. The noble practise continued till his official retirement date.
He is such a revered figure that the Chinese soldiers still leave a chair vacant as a mark of respect to Singh during Flag meetings with the Indian troops.
Singh's memorial was built after he came in the dream of one of his colleagues and expressed his desire of a shrine attributed to him.
