Toyota To Locally Manufacture The 1.4-litre GD Diesel Engine In India
Toyota Kirloskar Motors locally produces the 2.4-litre and 2.8-litre diesel engines, which do duty in the Innova Crysta. Both these engines are manufactured in Jigani, Karnataka. Now, Toyota plans on locally sourcing the 1.4-litre diesel engine as well.
The 1.4-litre GD diesel engine from Toyota, if locally manufactured, could be used in several of their models such as Etios, Etios Cross, Etios Liva, and Corolla Altis. The ban on the sale of diesel engines over 2.0-litre could be one of the major factors behind this decision.
As of now, Toyota imports the 1.4-litre diesel engine from Japan. Locally manufactured engines will help in better pricing of Toyota's entry-level products. The new 1.4-litre diesel engine from Toyota could debut in India with the facelifted version of the Etios.
Previously, Toyota Kirloskar Motors had pulled the plug on investing in its India operations. The Japanese-based manufacturer is now re-thinking its investment plan in the country to boost sales. A new manufacturing line could be introduced to locally produce the 1.4-litre diesel engine.
