A hobby packed with life lessons

In response to an article last week, we asked if you would collect a particular item if given a chance. Find out what other children your age like to scout for...

I started collecting seeds as a hobby, but over time I became interested in different eco-systems and started collecting seeds wherever I went. I have set up a home garden and save the seeds I get there for the future. They can be an asset for the next generation.

I would like to collect handmade toys which are specific to a region whenever I travel. These will not only remind me of those places but also the craft. They could range from Tanjore bommais (dolls) to pallanguzhi.

I like to collect old newspapers. Reports in old newspapers make history come alive and we learn about the people who lived then. We get to know about their hopes and sorrows and realise they were not very different from us.

I have been collecting beads from the time I was six years old. I sometimes find beads from broken accessories. I also make chains or bracelets using them.

I love collecting shells and spotting them is like going on a treasure hunt. Each shell brings back a memory and I’ve decorated my room using them.

I love a chocolate named Nutties, and it is no longer available in my city. My sister buys the chocolate whenever she visits me. I started collecting the red chocolate boxes because they remind of my sister’s visit and the fun we had.

Given a chance, I would like to collect old coins and currencies as it enhances our appreciation of art, expands our knowledge of history, geography and politics and creates opportunities to socialise with others who have similar interests. Coins in ancient times were like newspapers and told you about the ruler.

Ananya S. Mallia,

Class VIII, The Delta Study,

I love reading and have been collecting the cover pages of books that appear in newspapers.

Bhuvaneshwar B.,
