Lay ring road to ease traffic congestion: MP

V. Panneer Selvam, MP, has urged the Union Ministry or Road Transport and Highways to take steps to lay an outer ring road in Salem to ease traffic congestion in the city.

He raised the issue during the Zero Hour in Lok Sabha on Wednesday and said that the National Highway (NH 7) passed through Salem city. The NH 47 and NH 68 commences from Salem city and also the State Highways road SH 18.

A large number of vehicles pass through these national highways and State highway leading to frequent traffic congestion in the city.

Proposal

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) proposed an outer ring road under National Highways Development Project (NHDP) phase VII to a length of 60 km around Salem city connecting all the three national highways, in order to ease the traffic congestion. Mr. Panneer Selvam said that this scheme had been pending since 2008 and urged the Union Ministry for Road Transport and Highways to take steps to implement the project.
