JAMMU, Aug 1: Two International Scholars, viz Anish Gawande and Malvika Jolly of Columbia University, New York, USA, visited Natrang and had an interaction programme with Natrang Director, Balwant Thakur and others directors, actors, scholars, trainees and students of Natrang.
They were accompanied by Priyanka D’Souza of M S University, Baroda, who is perusing Masters in Fine Arts. The visiting scholars were first shown a play ‘Maadhavi’ written by legendary playwright Bhisham Sahni and directed by Rahul Singh, which was presented in an intimate style in Natrang Studio Theatre. This was followed by an interaction in which the visiting scholars reflected upon the performance and they also shared their experiences of the popular theatre practices which are in vogue in New York, USA.
To give them a glimpse of Jammu’s theatre rooted in the cultural soil of this region, Natrang Director, Balwant Thakur held a presentation of Natrang’s globally acclaimed Dogri play ‘Ghumayee’ describing threadbare the concept, design, production process and performance journey of the play which has the credit of bringing pride for the country by featuring in world’s acclaimed theatre festivals held in Russia and Germany. The visiting scholars were highly impressed by the originality of theatre approaches used in the creation of this unique play ‘Ghumayee’ particularly the imaginative use of visual images created through actor’s physical resources and compositions. They expressed their earnest desire to take such a kind of work to New York, USA so as the theatre lovers out there also know that how the magic is created on bare stage without the help of any props, settings and electronic gadgets. As a souvenir, they were presented the DVD folders of the play ‘Ghumayee’ by Natrang which they promised to exhibit for the theatre experts and promoters, before Natrang team is invited to perform live to enthral the audiences out there.
