Rebecca Judd goes on maternity leave after awkward moment with sports presenter Tony Jones

Jackie Epstein, Therese AllaouiHerald Sun

CHANNEL 9 sports presenter Tony Jones was praying for the bulletin to end after his awkward exchange with Rebecca Judd on last night’s news.

“All I could think of was please let this end and throw to the closer,’’ Jones told the Herald Sun.

“Most people can see the funny side of it. It might look awkward but we all do get on like a house on fire.”

Jones walked back into the shot after Judd presented her last weather segment before she has twin boys.

Jones put his hand on Judd’s shoulder and then went to give her a peck on the cheek.

She pulled away before breaking out in a fit of giggles.

It’s believed flowers were to be presented to Judd but without those Jones was asked to go back on set.

Judd laughed it off. “Tony and I are great mates. I got a big surprise when I turned my head to see him leaning in. If I’d known it was coming I would have graciously accepted,’’ she said.

Judd was wrapping up her last night on Channel Nine news before heading off on maternity leave.

Hitchener could barely contain his laughter while wrapping up the program.

It wasn’t the first time the pair were caught in an awkward television exchange during failed on-air banter.

Back in 2013, Jones lightheartedly asked Judd to “come round for a barbie”, to which she shut him down quickly with a “no, thanks”.
