The second Test at Kingston witnessed its fair share of controversy when opener KL Rahul was adjudged ‘out’ by the third umpire in a debatable manner.

In the 96th over of the innings, bowled by Shannon Gabriel, the right-hander tried to flick a short of length delivery which was on the pads but was supposedly caught down the leg side by West Indies wicket-keeper Shane Dowrich.

The on-field umpire referred the decision upstairs (which means he was sure that the ball had nicked the bat) to check whether the catch was clean or not and replays showed that Dowrich had grasped it well above the ground. However, much to the surprise of all present at the ground, the third umpire then checked whether Rahul had edged it or not and as this is a series where DRS isn’t being used, the facility of hotspot or snickometer wasn’t available and it was almost impossible to make sure whether it took an edge or not. But, the centurion was adjudged ‘out’ and he walked back to the pavilion shaking his head.

Ideally in a situation where the on-field umpire consults his colleague sitting in the air-conditioned room for a clean catch, it is assumed that he is sure about the batsman hitting the ball, so the third umpire doesn’t check for an edge but surprisingly things didn’t happen that way in Rahul’s case.

Riding on Rahul's career-high 158 the visitors consolidated their dominance on Day 2. India scored slowly, adding only 232 runs off 88 overs, while losing four wickets on a day that will not go down as one of the most compelling in cricket history.

The Virat Kohli-led outfit were 358 for five in their first innings by close of play at Sabina Park, a lead of 162 runs with five wickets in hand.
