Truck drivers are notorious in Japan so it's both sad and ironic that they killed each other in this smash.

SenseNotSoCommon
The technology to ensure passenger cars stay in their lanes is becoming more commonplace.
If government mandated accident avoidance tech for trucks, we might see less of these tragedies. But then driver and third-party safety isn't a big priority for truck fleet buyers or their lobbyists.

I've seen the aftermath of when truck drivers fall asleep. I once woke a driver up with my horn as he drifted into my lane at 3am once -frightening!

There's good money to be had from driving a truck - if you put in insane hours - so there's your incentive. Are there no such things as driver recorders and mandatory rest breaks in Japan?
Of course there are, they are just never enforced.
