Punjab Pradesh Congress Chief and former chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh slammed the state government Saturday for ignoring Panjab University, which is grappling with shortage of funds.
Commenting on the deteriorated fiscal condition of the university, Capt Amarinder Singh said, “It is sad that Panjab University, that has a distinct history and identity, is being ignored by the state government led by the Akalis”.
PU is an inter-state university, with Punjab being the only other state now involved. Punjab provide maintenance grant of only Rs 20 crore. The central government provides funds to the university through the UGC after adjusting the Punjab contribution and the surplus from self-financing courses.
Capt said that it was also an irony that while the Akalis strongly resisted the attempts to make it a central university, they have starved it of the requisite funds.
“I have been repeatedly saying and I reiterate it today that education and health will be our top most priorities. No matter from where I will have to manage the funds, I will ensure that these two sectors get their due,” he added.
In recognition of its status and importance, not only will we ensure that it gets timely grants that are due, but we will also provide special and additional assistance that benefits the institution to retain and maintain its historical importance, asserted Capt Amarinder Singh.
