Forty-five-year-old Sakunthala Devi of Kurinjipadi in Varadarajan Palayam, Cuddalore district, was reunited with her family more than five years after she went missing.

It is learnt that the mentally ill married woman was aged about 40 years at that time when she went missing.

Her aged mother Valliammal and sister Mani, who searched for her assumed that she was dead, as told by persons known to them. They were overjoyed when the missing woman was reunited with them on Thursday.

While her whereabouts was not known, about six months ago she was rescued from the streets in Bengaluru and admitted in RVM Hospital for treatment.

While she was adamant and behaved violently in the beginning, she got back consciousness and managed to say that she was from Kurinjipadi in Tamil Nadu.

Recently, Coimbatore Eera Nenjam NGO who took four mentally affected women – who were rescued from the street – for treatment to the hospital in Bengaluru came to know about Sakunthala Devi. “Our volunteers traced her family at Kurinjipadi village and we reunited her with her mother and sister,” says P. Mahendiran of the NGO.

It is learnt that her husband who searched for Sakunthala Devi in the early days had taken their son with him as she could not be traced. The family has not started search for her husband and son, whose whereabouts are not known.
