With an aim to bring home two gold medals, the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) has offered a bonus of Rp 1 billion (US$76,356) to any Olympian that wins a gold medal at the Rio games.
“We will show our appreciation to our shuttlers [with bonuses]. The champions will get bonuses in the form of prize money, as well will their coaches and supporting staff,” PBSI chief Gita Wirjawan said as quoted by the association’s website, badmintonindonesia.org.
Gold medalists will not be the only ones to enjoy bonuses. Silver medalists will be awarded Rp 500 million, while bronze medalists will receive Rp 250 million. Badminton contributes the largest squad with 10 shuttlers, out of 28 athletes, for Rio.
Indonesia has secured all five events in badminton, with Tommy Sugiarto in men’s singles, Lindaweni Fanetri in women’s singles, Hendra Setiawan/Mohammad Ahsan in men’s doubles, Nitya Krishinda Maheswari/Greysia Polii in women’s doubles as well as Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir and Praveen Jordan/Debby Susanto in mixed doubles.
The Indonesian badminton team is in Sao Paolo for preparations before going onto the battlefield on Aug. 11-20 in Rio de Janeiro.
