K'taka bandh over Mahadayi water issue evoks mixed response

While it was near total in the city and in Bombay-Karnataka districts of Dharwad, Bagalkot, Vijayapura and Gadag, it evoked poor response in Old Mysore. In Hyderabad-Karnataka region, barring Koppal district, the bandh call had poor response. Elaborate security arrangements had been made across the state, especially in the affected districts in north with deployment of RAF and CRPF in Bombay-Karnataka region after Dharwad witnessed violent incidents two days ago following the tribunal order. Public transport like State Transport Corporation buses were withdrawn in some districts including Bengaluru urban and rural, besides Dharwad, Bagalkot, while KSRTC operated buses as usual in H-K region and Old Mysore area. Barring the Bengaluru and Dharwad, schools and colleges functioned normally. Operations of public and private sector banks was not affected in the entire state. Petrol stations were closed in many districts as the association had extended support to the bandh. In the city, normal life was not affected as it was Saturday and IT and BT companies remained closed for the weekend. Even autorickshaws were fewer in number on the roads and petrol bunks have shut down in support of the bandh. Film industry too expressed its solidarity with theatres stopping screening of films for the day and Malls too were closed. Several organisations had extended support to today's bandh. Taxi and BMTC services to and from Airport were affected as many operators had expressed their support to the shut off stir but some operators plied their vehicles that helped to ferry air passengers. Home Minister G Parameshwara said here that the situation was peaceful barring stray incidents of stone pelting in some places. He had warned serious actions against miscreants who indulge in arson and violence. He said police had ensured elaborate security cover in Bombay-Karnataka districts while the situation in the city was peaceful. MORE UNI TEAM RS CNR CS 1114
