Football coaches are not only noted for their ability to see something new and implement it into their scheme with their own wrinkle, but they learn to adapt. College football has gone spread happy, and the Mountain West had its fair share of teams joining the party.

But if you can’t beat a team in one-on-one matchups on the outside, you have to find a way to fight back. When defenses start gearing more toward speed and away from power, a big, punishing offensive line can do the trick to stem the tide.

San Diego State coach Rocky Long explained it this way: No matter how fast a spread offense can score, they can’t do it standing on the sideline.
