Vengasseri Seetha will now head Chemmangad police station

The directive was aimed at making police stations more women-friendly

Kozhikode: The new Station House Officer at Chemmangad police station, Kozhikode, is a woman. When Vengasseri Seetha, hailing from Olipram Kadavu in Malappuram district, took charge of the station on Friday, it was the fulfilment of her parents’ aspiration to see her in a good position in life. The parents, both daily wage labourers, had educated their daughter well along with their three sons to realise their dreams.

The appointment of Seetha and six other women officers follows DGP Loknath Behera’s recent directive to post women SHOs in general police stations. The directive was aimed at making police stations more women-friendly and remove the women’s fear of approaching the police stations. Till now, they were in charge of the women police stations in the state.

“I joined the service in 1991 and served in Malappuram, Valanhery, Tirur, Tirurangadi, Tanur, Police Academy, Thrissur, Karipur airport emigration and Vaikom women police station before joining here. By introducing women SHOs, the women would be able to approach the station without fear,” said Seetha.

“Being the station house in-charge is a tough task. But I don’t think there is any separate job for only for women. I have more than 25 years’ experience and was in charge of the women station in Kozhikode. We are ready to handle any role irrespective of gender. There are women police officers doing tougher tasks. So, manning a general station would not be difficult,” she added, thanking City Police Commissioner Uma Behra and Kasaba CI P. Pramod, who encouraged her in taking up the new job.
