Daily wage labourer drowns in check dam

A daily wage labourer, in his 50s, drowned at the check dam near Perumpallam in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh on Friday. Police said he jumped into the water to take bath in an inebriated condition.

Police said Seenu, a resident of Keezh Palathur in Vellore, had consumed liquor at a shop in Perumpallam and visited the Kanakanatchiamman temple near the check dam across Palar river.

The water level had increased in the dam following rain in the region in the last two days.

A number of villagers had gathered at the spot to take a look.

Despite being warned by his relatives, Seenu jumped into the water to take bath, but drowned as he was in an inebriated state, police said.

Kuppam police will conduct an inquiry, police attached to Thimmampet station in Vaniyambadi sub-division said.

It was recently that the Andhra Pradesh government raised the height of the check dam from five feet to 12 feet. Water was brimming at the check dam on Friday.
