Autorickshaw drivers owing allegiance to various trade unions on Friday picketed the Regional Transport Office on the 100-feet-Road to register their protest against the Transport Department’s decision to regulate two-wheeler rentals and issue licences to them.
The agitators led by Sethu Selvam, executive committee member of the Communist Party of India (CPI) raised slogans against the Transport Department and said that the two-wheeler rentals were already affecting their business.
The agitators alleged that though rental of two-wheelers was illegal, they continued to operate for the last several years. They demanded the Transport Department to rescind the decision and enforce a strict ban on these rentals.
The protesters also demanded the Government to revise the autorickshaw fares in the city. The minimum fare should be fixed as Rs.40 and Rs.20 for every additional km.
The autorickshaw drivers later withdrew their protest after officials promised to look into their demands.
