Manchester City planning Fernandinho contract talks - source

Manchester City are planning contract talks with Fernandinho after the Brazilian's impressive preseason displays for new boss Pep Guardiola, a source has told ESPN FC.

The Brazilian midfielder has one year remaining on the four-year deal he signed when he made his £31 million move from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2013.

Guardiola has only been working with the first team for less than a month, but has already been impressed by Fernandinho and praised the 31-year-old's intelligence during City's preseason tour in China.

"I think Fernandinho can play in 10 positions," the Catalan coach said at a news conference in China on Wednesday. "He has the quality to play wherever. He could play at centre back. He's a quick, fast player, so intelligent, aggressive and strong in the air. He has the quality to create good build-up."

Fernandinho, who does not turn 32 until May, is the only first-team player to have completed 90 minutes for Guardiola this preseason.

He has also captained the side in their two preseason friendlies -- the 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich and the International champions Cup victory over Borussia Dortmund in Shenzhen.

In addition to Fernandinho, reports suggest striker Sergio Aguero is also expected to sign a contract extension before the new season starts.
