Brewers' Jonathan Lucroy has right to block trade to Cleveland

Milwaukee Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy has eight teams on a no-trade list in his contract to which he could block trades if so desired.

Jonathan Lucroy is batting .300 this season with the Brewers.

Cleveland, Detroit, Los Angeles Angels, Minnesota, Oakland, San Diego, Seattle and Washington are the eight teams identified, according to ESPN.

Of those teams, only the Indians are believed to be in play in trade discussions with the Brewers involving Lucroy. The Tigers reportedly had interest but dropped out because they didn't have the kind of prospects the Brewers are seeking to trade Lucroy before the non-waiver deadline Monday at 3 p.m.

Should the Brewers have a trade in place with Cleveland or any club on Lucroy's no-trade list, they would need his permission to finalize that deal. Lucroy simply could say no, killing the deal, or ask for some kind of accomodation to waive the no-trade clause. Sometimes, players seek contract extensions, something Lucroy had no success receiving from the Brewers.

Lucroy's contract with the Brewers expires after the season but there is a club option for 2017 at $5.25 million that any acquiring team certainly would exercise.

Other teams supposedly showing interest in Lucroy during this trading period include Texas, Houston, Boston and the New York Mets. There were reports that the Brewers re-engaged the Mets on Thursday after talks broke off earlier in the week but New York has not shown interest in trading away the few top prospects they have in a thin system. Accordingly, it would seem unlikely a deal would be struck.

The Brewers have relief pitchers who have drawn interest from several clubs and might package one with Lucroy to do a bigger deal. Otherwise, they could decide to do separate deals or if they don't like the best offer now, they could wait and try to trade Lucroy over the winter.

As of Friday morning, there was no indication the Brewers were ready to pull the trigger on any trade.
