Baniyas have finally found their match for a new boss. Uruguayan Pablo Repetto Aquino will be replacing Dr Abdullah Mesfer as the head coach at the Abu Dhabi club.
Aquino has agreed to the terms of contract set by Baniyas and will be part of the team's overseas camp in the Netherlands starting August 1. Aquino will soon be joining the club once he puts pen to paper.
Aquino is just what the doctor ordered for Baniyas.
He had a dramatic Thursday as he bid goodbye to his Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle with his team coming second-best in the finals of the Copa Libertadores - the most prestigious club competition in Latin American football. The runner-up position is the best result for the club in this tournament.
They went into the final with reputation of being the giant killers but his boys went down fighting 1-0 against Colombian team Atletico Nacional at Medellin, Colombia.
En route to the finals, Aquino saw his boys dump Copa Libertadores defending champions River Plate, Argentine powerhouse Boca Juniors and survive Mexico's Pumas UNAM in penalties in the semifinals of the competition.
Now the 42-year-old has his task cut out for him. He joins a team that finished ninth in the Arabian Gulf League 2015-16 season. Baniyas have recently bolstered their midfield with Fellipe Bastos joining their ranks from Al Ain.
Club spokesman Hashim Othman Al Mohammed had earlier said the club were taking 'careful steps to land a person with experience and knowledge'. They had entered into negotiations with Argentina coach Ramon Diaz, Colombian Reinaldo Rueda among others.
