Katy Perry fundraises for Clinton on convention stage
PHILADELPHIA — Pop singer Katy Perry used her prime-time slot at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday night to help Hillary Clinton fill her campaign coffers.
Perry, who sang a medley of her hit songs “Rise” and “Roar,” spoke about her support for the Democratic presidential nominee.
{mosads}“I love Hillary. I have saved messages on my phone from HRC,” she said. “And, as you know I’ve got a closet full of Hillary-themed dresses.”
The entertainer has been traveling on and off with Clinton throughout the campaign.
“And now you can join her on the road, too,” Perry said.
“If you go to HillaryClinton.com and donate before midnight,” Perry said, “you could win a chance to join Hillary on the road and see for yourself why I know she should be the next President of the United States.”
“And maybe, I’ll let you borrow one of my outfits,” she said.
The fundraising plea from the convention stage is the only such mention at either party’s convention this year.
Perry’s remarks and two-song set came at the height of the action on the convention stage, immediately before Chelsea Clinton introduced her mother to the stage.
The “Firework” singer had indeed been with Clinton early on in her election season.
She played a Clinton rally in Iowa last October and performed at a sold-out fundraiser with Sir Elton John at Radio City Music Hall in New York City in March.
The Clinton campaign paid Perry’s production company — Kitty Purry Inc. — a total of almost $90,000 throughout the 2016 campaign cycle for “event production”; records with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) records are not more specific.
In March, the campaign bought an additional $400 worth of merchandise from Perry, FEC records show.
On the convention stage Thursday night, Perry also brought up money-in-politics issues, urging the audience — which contained some very vocal supporters of former Clinton rival Bernie Sanders — to use the ballot box to combat powerful gun lobbyists.
“Both my parents are pastors and staunch Republicans. I didn’t finish high school. Unfortunately, I don’t have a formal education. But I do have an open mind. And I have a voice,” Perry said.
“I’m asking you to have an open mind. And to use your voice,” she continued. “Because on Nov. 8, you’ll be just as powerful as any NRA lobbyist. You’ll have as much say as any billionaire.”
“Or you can cancel out your weird cousin’s vote,” she joked.
