PHILADELPHIA — In a speech to the Democratic National Convention, Chelsea Clinton described her mother as a warm and caring mom, a playful grandmother and most of all as a tireless fighter for children.
The younger Ms. Clinton, introducing Hillary Clinton to become the first woman to accept a major party’s nomination for president, sought to soften her mothers image while simultaneously praising her toughness as a leader.
“This November, I’m voting for a woman who is my role model as a mother and as an advocate. A woman who has spent her entire life working for children and family,” the younger Ms. Clinton said, introducing Hillary Clinton for her speech accepting the Democratic nomination.
Chelsea Clinton talked about how her mother and father, former President Bill Clinton, raised her to be a strong and opinionated woman, encouraging her to share her views at the diner table and “back them up with facts.”
“I never once doubted that they cared about my thoughts and ideas. And I always, always knew how deeply they loved me,” said Chelsea Clinton. “That feeling — being valued and loved — that’s something my mom wants for every child. It is the calling of her life.”
She said that her mother would protect the planet from climate change and American communities from gun violence, reform the criminal justice system and champion the rights of women and gay Americans.
Chelsea Clinton said that when she votes for her mother in November, she would be voting for “a fighter.”
“I’m voting for a fighter who never, ever gives up and who always believes we can do better, if we come together and work together,” she said. “I hope that one day my children are as proud of me as I am of my mother.”
