Sports medicine unit in Kozhikode Government Medical College

Kerala State Sports Council president T.P. Dasan said the government would take all necessary measures for its progress.

KOZHIKODE: Kerala State Sports Council president T.P. Dasan has assured immediate steps to start a sports medicine unit at Kozhikode Government Medical College where a vacant building was already allotted. Admitting that the sports medicine is one of the weakest areas in the state, he said the government would take all necessary measures for its progress.

He said the introduction of a meaningful programme for sports and physical education into the curriculum would also be on the immediate agenda of the council. “It would be introduced in phases utilising the services of existing physical education teachers and the periods set apart for it,” he told reporters here on Thursday.

“Measures will be adopted to develop sports psychology, courses to produce trainers in various sports and promotion of sports journalism, sports nutrition and sports hostels within a year,” he said. He also highlighted the need to focus on physical fitness of students.

“A recent government study has revealed that only 20 per cent of them have attained minimum fitness, and the rest are not physically fit at all,” he said. “The mission of the government is to develop physical fitness among students, and hence we want the subject to be included in their syllabus so that students understand its importance,” he added.
