Briefly in Sports: Fischer sisters help U.S. sweep Russia in Olympic tuneup

The U.S. Olympic women’s water polo team, which includes Makenzie and Aria Fischer of Laguna Beach, completed a three-game sweep of Russia on Wednesday by powering its way to a 16-7 victory before a capacity crowd at Stanford University.

Makenzie (two goals) and Aria Fischer (one goal) combined to score the first three goals of the second half to extend Team USA’s lead to 13-3 late in the third quarter. Makenzie Fischer, who will enter Stanford in the fall, was one of five U.S. players with multiple goals.

In the first game played July 21 at San Diego Cathedral Catholic High, Team USA won, 16-5. Makenzie Fischer scored once in the opening match.

The teams met Sunday at UCLA, and Team USA posted a 15-7 win. Makenzie Fischer scored once, and her goal was the first of the game and came in the opening minute of play. Maddie Musselman of Corona del Mar High, a UCLA commit, led the scoring with four goals.

Team USA begins the 2016 Olympic Games on Aug. 9 in Rio de Janeiro with an opening group-play game against Spain.

Fleming hosts youth hoops camp

A summer basketball camp for local youth will start Monday at the Laguna Beach High gymnasium.

The camp, run by Laguna Beach boys’ basketball Coach Bret Fleming, is open to youth in grades sixth through eighth. It will run from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 1 to 5.

The 40th annual The VIC World Skimboard Championship are scheduled for Aug. 27 and 28 at Aliso Creek Beach in Laguna Beach.

Competition will be held in the following divisions: Pro Men, Pro Women, Amateur Women, Amateur Men (eight-and-under), Amateur Men (ages 9-11), Amateur Men (12-14), Amateur Men (15-17), Amateur Men (18-21), Amateur Men (22-24), Amateur Men (25-29), Amateur Men (30-39), and Amateur Men (40-and-older). Registration deadline is midnight on Aug. 24.
