Condition of man injured in SOG firing deteriorates

July 29, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 06:01 am IST - BERHAMPUR:

Injured Luta Digal of Gumudumaha village in Kandhamal district of Odisha was again admitted in MKCG medical college and hospital in Berhampur of Odisha as his condition deteriorated.

Luta along with his wife were injured by bullets fired at an autorickshaw by jawans of Special Operation Group of Odisha police during anti-Maoist operation in Kandhamal district on July 8 night. Their 13-month-old child was one of the five who died in the incident.

Luta had been earlier treatedat at MKCG but for some reason he had been discharged from hospital and sent back home. As his condition deteriorated again, he had to be shifted to Baliguda hospital in Kandhamal on Wednesday night from there he was referred to MKCG again.

Deteriorating condition of his wounds was noticed by a seven-member team of CPI (M), which visited Gumudumaha on Wednesday. Former MP Pulin Kumar Baske, who happens to be a physician by profession, was in the team.

“Mr Baske could detect that the wounds of Luta were deteriorating and had started to show septicaemia symptoms. Mr Baske felt any delay could prove dangerous and fatal for the injured youth. Luta had also suddenly become unconscious after meeting the CPI (M) team,” said Odisha state secretary of CPI (M) Ali Kishor Patnaik.

The CPI (M) team had immediately informed about state of Luta to sub-collector of Baliguda urging for immediate action.

On Thursday, a CPI (M) team led by Mr Patnaik reached MKCG medical college hospital to meet Luta. Mr Patnaik said Luta’s plight revealed reality behind state government claim of providing all medical support to injured persons of Gumudumaha.

“Medical negligence”

“There is no regular monitoring of condition of the injured of Gumudumaha. If Mr Baske would not have identified Luta’s septicemia condition, it may have deteriorated further within a day or two”, he alleged.

He demanded all the injured in the incident, including Luta, to be provided psychiatric treatment as they were in mental shock.

Free ration for families of the deceased and injured for six months and at least ten lakh compensation for the injured was demanded by the CPI (M).
