Extreme makeover

The Tsing Ma Bridge in Hong Kong carries the expressway connecting Kowloon Peninsula to Lantau Island and Hong Kong’s airport. This is a busy area with a rocky shoreline with shipping activities below and aircrafts flying by overhead.

Interior designer Pal Pang Yu-Yan of Another Design International renovated an existing apartment in this region into a swanky, yet serene and charming three-bedroom, four-bathroom bachelor pad. The 2400 square feet duplex apartment is owned by a young entrepreneur who was impressed by Pal’s work and commissioned him to do his place.

Despite the busy atmosphere below and above, the inside has a calming and serene feel due to the design concepts used. The place boasts of high ceiling (four metres), white walls, huge glass windows and a large wrap-around deck. The windows allow for ample natural lighting and stunning views of the shipping channels and shoreline.

The two-level pad has a terrace and a plunge pool on one side and a cantilever balcony off the living room. Pal has used simple and minimal design with Japanese themes to
incorporate the serenity element. As the earlier construction was of good workmanship and quality, very few changes were done with the existing structure. The only structural change done was to the foyer leading to the downstairs bedroom.

The white walls and marble floors are well complemented by American walnut-wood cladding to the open-living ceiling, dining areas and a wall of storage cupboards. Pal also created a three dimensional feature wall of acoustic tiles which are visually engaging along with absorbing the sound well.
