Adorable Seal Caught Napping In Tasmanian Public Toilet

Imagine the levels of excitement you’d experience on entering a public toilet and finding a seal fast asleep on the floor.

This was the sight that greeted a council work crew at a public toilet block in Tasmania recently.

The Australian fur seal was found in the lades’ loos at Mersey Vale Lawn Cemetary on Tuesday, which is about 500m from the ocean.

It’s believed that the seal - who’s been named Sammy - may have swum up a nearby creek to reach his resting place. Then, worn out by his exertion, he nodded off.

The council crew found 120kg (265lb) Sammy fast asleep on the floor. He was sedated by wildlife officers and taken to a nearby beach, where he was released.

Devonport City Council’s Karina Moore told the ABC News that seals were commonplace in the area, and it wasn’t unusual for them to find themselves away from the water.

She said: “They’re a really abundant species all around Tasmania, particularly in Bass Strait, and we’ve had them turn up in Cataract Gorge, paddocks, people’s backyards, and now we can add a toilet block in a cemetery to the list.

"It’s been one of those positive stories that we’ve had a lot of fun with.”
