250 Hindu Dalit families threatens to embrace Islam in TN

Nagapattinam, Jul 28 (UNI) Upset over alleged caste discrimination, as many as 250 Hindu Dalit families in Nagapattinam and Karur districts of Tamil Nadu have threatened to embrace Islam -- in what it was presumed as mass religious conversion in the State after 1981.
Reliable sources said 180 Dalit families of the coastal village of Pazhangkallimedu in Nagapattinam district were considering converting to Islam after being denied worship rights in Goddess Bhadra Kaliamman Temple. The Dalit families said they want to perform rituals on one day during the five-day annual temple festival, but it was alleged that the Caste Hindus refuse to allow the Hindu Dalits to participate in the festival.
The locals claimed that volunteers of Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamaath (TNTJ), a Muslim outfit had distributed copies of the Quran to the Hindu Dalit families and in fact a senior functionary of the outfit was behind it. The TNTJ facilitated atleast six Hindu Dalit families to embraced Islam. Similarly, Christian missionary volunteers also visited the Hindu Dalit families for religious conversion.
