Titans GM Jon Robinson aims to be 'void of sentimentality' on roster

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The two general managers who preceded Jon Robinson with the Tennessee Titans were quiet, reserved men.

Robinson has a much bigger personality, and paired with the moves he’s made in his first six months on the job, he’s been a big hit with players as well as fans and media.

He’s already connected way more with players than Mike Reinfeldt or Ruston Webster ever did.

“For us as players, it’s been fun to watch him," veteran cornerback Jason McCourty said. “He’s right there throughout practice, even to the point where we’ve done some conditioning after practice for some of the mistakes we’ve made and he’s run a gasser or two with us. You can kind of just see the love of the game coming out while he’s out there, how much he appreciates it.”

But Robinson knows, too, that he needs some distance as he’s going to be making hard decisions while controlling the 53-man roster.

“That’s kind of a fine line that I have to walk and that really all personnel men, in my opinion, have to walk,” Robinson said. “Really you have to know that you genuinely care about all of the players, but from a business decision we have to be void of sentimentality. Because the decisions that are made are the decisions that are best for the Tennessee Titans.

“Right, wrong, or indifferent, that’s what we have to go with. ... We want to grow, we want to feel one, we want to feel family and we’re all working toward a common goal. Yet, you have to be judicious and understand that we’re in the sports/entertainment business at the end of the day.”

Players, at least older players, have a good understanding of that dynamic.

“He is our GM, but you do appreciate a guy kind of being in it with you and willing to have conversations with you,” McCourty said. “But at the end of the day, we still know it’s a business and what it consists of.”
